Yizhuo Guo's Biomimetic Wasteland Nomad Uses Wind and Water to Restore Damaged Ecosystems

Designer Yizhuo Guo has developed a passive, unpowered device called Wasteland Nomad that mimics tumbleweed behavior to restore damaged landscapes. The biodegradable structure, made from biochar and indigenous plant seeds, rolls across terrain driven by wind and opens when encountering moisture to deposit materials that help soil recover. Inspired by natural seed dispersal mechanisms, the project aims to provide low-cost ecological restoration for post-industrial areas like Norilsk, Fukushima exclusion zones, and abandoned mining regions. Guo presented this work during her Master's degree exhibition at Central Saint Martins.
