Yinka Shonibare Debuts First Paris Solo Show at Mennour with "The Wind, the Earth and the Fire"
Mennour presents "The Wind, the Earth and the Fire," the first solo exhibition in Paris by Yinka Shonibare, at the gallery's 5 rue du Pont de Lodi space. New quilts join hand-painted bronze and textile sculptures, placing several ongoing bodies of work in dialogue. The presentation positions Shonibare among the leading voices examining postcolonialism and hybridity in contemporary art. Born in London and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, the artist has consistently moved between and bridged distinct cultures. His practice traces the history of Dutch wax textiles, a material whose layered origins he uses to expose the difficulty of fixing identity. The show argues that belonging and self-definition exceed what a national archive alone can supply, a point decolonial studies continue to develop. Shonibare's multidisciplinary output spans sculpture, textiles and painting. The exhibition is on view at Mennour's rue du Pont de Lodi address in Paris.
