Yilun Liu Explores the Blur Between Experience and Representation

Artist Yilun Liu investigates how digital technologies mediate personal experience through photography, performance, and installation. Born in China and based in London, Liu studied architecture before developing a practice that combines photography, performance, digital media, and installation. Her project "Paris Archive" (2025) uses Google Street View to construct an imaginary journey to Paris, never actually taken, questioning authenticity in travel photography. In "Hands as Shelf" (2025), she transforms everyday consumer products into temporary sculptures balanced on an outstretched hand. "Cat's Cradle" (2023), inspired by the children's string game, involved a performer suspended in a web of interconnected lines, emphasizing movement, trust, and collaboration. "Out of the Skin, in the Wind" (2025) uses clothing, projected images, light, and movement to explore how people persist through traces of presence in an immersive environment. Liu's work consistently examines how images, archives, and digital platforms shape memory, perception, and understanding of places and events.
