Yi Design Turns Jingdezhen Porcelain Waste into Recycled Tiles for Erdos, Icicle and New Balance

architecture-design · 2026-09-30

In the spring of 2021, Yi Design, a ceramic tile manufacturer from China, gathered discarded porcelain in Jingdezhen to create a reserve for future product innovation. Their product, YiTile, consists of 70% recycled content and is utilized by high-end brands like Erdos and Icicle. The company is set to broaden its reach into Japan, the US, Australia, and South Korea, with backing from European clients. Caroline Cheng, the 63-year-old founder with extensive ceramics experience and a connection to The Pottery Workshop since 1991, leads the initiative. Among their offerings is the award-winning YiBrick, which is showcased in the material libraries of prominent studios. The company is achieving financial stability, with Cheng focused on lowering carbon emissions and advocating for recycled ceramics.
