Yangnar Studio's Villa Sanlomjoy in Chiang Mai Built from Reclaimed Wooden Doors and Windows

architecture-design · 2026-10-22

Completed in 2020, Villa Sanlomjoy is a 250 m² house in Chiang Mai by Yangnar Studio, led by architect Dechophon Rattanasatchatham with technical team member Rungroj Tansukanun. The project grew out of childhood memories and a collection of salvaged wooden doors and windows, some brought from Myanmar through Mae Sot in Tak, Thailand. Its character is an Anglo-Burmese synthesis: British colonial proportions and European window typologies meet traditional Myanmar craftsmanship — wooden joinery, mortise-and-tenon joints, louvres and casement windows. Rather than serving as decoration, these openings form the architectural structure itself, setting the house's proportions, height and rhythm and shaping how it meets light and air. Photographs are by Rungkit Charoenwat; the project was curated by Miwa Negoro and published by ArchDaily with a Spanish-language edition.
