Yakisugi Cabin: A Compact, Transportable Dwelling by Alki Architecture + Design Studio

The Yakisugi Cabin, designed by Alki Architecture + Design Studio, is a compact and transportable dwelling that explores architecture shaped by available resources, turning material limitations into a generative design tool. The project, curated by Miwa Negoro, integrates reclaimed materials, traditional craftsmanship, and high-performance contemporary construction to test how light a building's footprint can be on both its site and the broader material environment. With an area of 40 m², the cabin was completed in 2025 and is located in New Zealand. The design and landscaping were handled by Charlotte Muschamp, while StrawSIP provided the straw SIP wall panels and construction. Other suppliers include Earth Studio and Terra Lana.
