World’s Largest Serial Killer Artifact Collection Opens in Chicago

exhibition · 2026-09-09

A new exhibition in Chicago, 'Serial Killer: The Exhibition,' showcases over 2,000 artifacts linked to notorious serial killers, including John Wayne Gacy and H.H. Holmes. The 21,000-square-foot space presents personal belongings, investigative evidence, and artworks from approximately 150 killers across dozens of countries. Exhibition consultant John Borowski emphasized the originality of the artifacts, noting that no similar exhibit exists worldwide. Gacy, who killed at least 33 young men in the 1970s, is prominently featured, with some of his paintings displayed for the first time, lent by Karen Conti, a lawyer from his appeals team. Conti kept the paintings hidden for 30 years, unsure how to handle them. The exhibition also covers other Chicago killers like Richard Speck, the Ripper Crew, and Tillie Klimek. Billed as the world’s largest private collection of such artifacts, it toured Europe and Atlanta before opening in Chicago over Labor Day weekend, running through January. Bill Kimberlin, a true-crime researcher, stressed the exhibition's aim to avoid glorification and to provide insight into criminal psychology and law enforcement, with rooms dedicated to victims. The exhibition has attracted over 500,000 visitors worldwide.
