World Architecture Day Highlights Housing Crisis and a Le Corbusier Reassessment in Switzerland

architecture-design · 2026-10-08

World Architecture Day opened the week by spotlighting the global housing crisis as a question of human dignity, inclusion and wellbeing. In a joint message, the UIA and the United Nations urged the discipline to build not only residential structures but also systems for distributing and better using what already exists, through proposals enabling new ways of inhabiting and alternatives for a more sustainable industry. Reflecting that theme, three projects were presented where reuse and representation converge, alongside three others that establish a dialogue between what is considered old and what can be expected from the new. The week's radar also includes another space for reexamining the canons of modern architecture in Switzerland, and the start of construction on a translucent building that is nonetheless resistant to hurricanes.
