Woman Fatally Shot by Police After Deadly Stabbing in Times Square

On Monday, a 49-year-old woman from Queens was shot and killed by police in New York City after she stabbed two individuals in Times Square, resulting in one fatality. This event took place just before 4:30 p.m. near a police substation outside One Times Square, famous for the New Year's Eve ball drop. According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the woman retrieved two knives from a shopping bag and attacked a 68-year-old man, who had just exited the subway with his wife, stabbing him in the abdomen. She also wounded a 32-year-old woman in the same manner. Both victims were hospitalized; the man remains in stable condition while the woman succumbed to her injuries. The NYPD noted the suspect had a history of mental illness. Social media footage captured at least 10 officers surrounding her as she held the knives. It remains unclear whether the victims were tourists or locals. The shooting took place in a highly policed and tourist-heavy area of New York City.
