David Hockney Dies at 88, Leaving a Legacy of Color and Queer Visibility
British artist David Hockney died at age 88 last week. Known for sun-bleached California pool scenes, psychological portraits, and digital experiments, he was a pioneer of LGBTQ+ representation in art. Hockney used computer graphics as early as the 1980s and later created iPad drawings. He also worked in printmaking, photography, and stage design for ballet and opera. Hyperallergic Associate Editor Lisa Yin Zhang penned a remembrance. Separately, the newsletter includes a guide by Rhea Nayyar to 25 US art shows for the 'America 250' celebrations, a review by Eileen G'Sell of the 4K restoration of 'I Shot Andy Warhol', and a studio visit with Daniel Correa Mejía. A member comment by Melanie Cohn discusses difficult conversations. The archive features a piece on Mina Loy by Lauren Moya Ford.
