Wittman Estes designs 400 sq ft prefab cabin on Blakely Island

Seattle-based architecture practice Wittman Estes has completed a 400 sq ft guest house on Blakely Island, Washington, designed for immersive forest living among mature trees. The tiny cabin, measuring 16ft x 20ft, sits on stilts to minimize site disturbance and contains a kitchen, Murphy bed, bath, and loft with two bunk beds. Built primarily from Western red cedar with a suspended metal walkway, the structure was prefabricated at a contractor's yard in Everett and reassembled on-site. The project draws on the tradition of Thoreau's Walden Cabin and Le Corbusier's Cabanon, with the architects emphasizing local materials and small spaces to distill living to its essence. The cabin offers sweeping views of foliage and water, with large glazed openings including a corner-bathroom window that blurs indoor-outdoor boundaries.
