Winston Churchill's Paintings Get First Major UK Retrospective at Wallace Collection

The Wallace Collection in London presents 'Winston Churchill: The Painter', the first major British retrospective of the former prime minister's artwork since his death in 1965. Featuring over 50 paintings, the exhibition repositions Churchill as an artist, not just a wartime leader. Churchill took up painting in his 40s during World War I after being dismissed from the Admiralty following the Gallipoli campaign. He completed over 500 works, using art as therapy for depression. Highlights include 'The Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque' (1943), painted after a meeting with Franklin D. Roosevelt in Morocco, which sold for over $11 million in 2021. More than half the works are from private collections, rarely seen publicly. The exhibition runs from May 23 to November 29.
