Widow's Bay: Apple TV+ horror series tackles gentrification

Apple TV+ has released 'Widow's Bay', a horror series created by Katie Dippold (Parks and Recreation) and directed by Hiro Murai (Mr. & Mrs. Smith). Set on a fictional island in New England, the show follows Mayor Tom (played by Matthew Rhys) who dreams of transforming the island into a tourist destination like Martha's Vineyard. However, his modernization plan is depicted as cultural colonization that awakens an ancient curse. The series uses supernatural elements to explore themes of gentrification, cultural identity, and the relationship between people and place. Filmed in Gloucester, Rockport, Essex, and Worcester, Massachusetts, the show draws on New England's gothic iconography. The cast includes Kate O'Flynn as Patricia, the mayor's eccentric assistant. The series has already been renewed for a second season. Critics note its blend of horror and comedy, and its political metaphor comparing the island's isolation to Brexit.
