Whitney Museum Opens First Major Roy Lichtenstein Survey in Over 30 Years

exhibition · 2026-07-22

The Whitney Museum of American Art is showcasing "Roy Lichtenstein: Like New," marking the first significant retrospective of the artist's creations in over three decades. This exhibition includes more than 130 pieces and delves into the sources behind them through curatorial research. A dimly lit space features a 15-minute video that reenacts Hoyt Sherman's "Flash Labs," with Alex Da Corte taking on the role of Sherman. Lichtenstein acknowledged Sherman, his mentor at Ohio State University, as a key influence on his artistic perspective. The curators have also recreated four murals, such as "Greene Street Mural" (1983) and "Super Sunset Billboard" (1967), while Lichtenstein's works draw inspiration from comic strips, advertisements, and artists like Picasso and Monet, prompting discussions about the allure of art.
