Whitney Museum Marks 25 Years of artport with Major Internet Art Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-10-05

On November 21, 2026, the Whitney Museum of American Art will unveil "artport: A History of Internet Art" in its sixth-floor galleries and online. This exhibition showcases over 100 pieces created since the platform's inception in 2001, categorized into three sections: Gate Pages (2001–2006), Commissions (ongoing), and Sunrise/Sunset (2009–2024). Designed to resemble floating browser windows, the exhibition highlights themes such as privacy, identity, and the distinction between online and offline experiences. Among the featured works is Douglas Davis's The World's First Collaborative Sentence (1994, donated 1995). Additionally, the anniversary program will include the debut of Human Unreadable Act III by Operator on November 19, 21, and 22, organized by Christiane Paul, David Lisbon, and Colin Brooks.
