Whistler's Dutch Influence Explored in Major Exhibition at Mesdag Collection

exhibition · 2026-04-16

From October 16, 2026, to January 10, 2027, The Mesdag Collection in The Hague will host "Whistler, Loving the Netherlands," which explores James Abbott McNeill Whistler's connection to Dutch art. Whistler (1834-1903) first encountered the works of 17th-century Dutch masters while training at the Imperial Academy in St. Petersburg's Hermitage. His early pieces in Paris showcased influences from Rembrandt's tonalities. After winning a gold medal in The Hague in 1863, Whistler embraced a minimalist approach, emphasizing water themes in creations like Amsterdam Nocturne (1883–1884). His 1889 visit led to the Amsterdam Set. The exhibition will feature Whistler's Dutch watercolors, prints, and urban scenes, which inspired artists such as Willem Witsen and Vincent van Gogh.
