Whistler Retrospective at Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam: Largest European Show in 30 Years

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is presenting a major retrospective of James McNeill Whistler, marking the largest European exhibition of his work in three decades and the first in the Netherlands. The exhibition runs from October 16, 2026, to January 10, 2027. It features around one hundred works, including the Nocturnes of the Thames, where fog consumes the riverbanks leaving only a shower of sparks; the White Girls, white silhouettes on white backgrounds; and Arrangement in Grey and Black, the portrait of his mother that became, against all intentions, an icon of American filial piety. Whistler, an American based in London, advocated for painting as music rather than narrative. In 1877, a critic accused him of throwing a pot of paint in the public's face. Whistler sued for libel and won, but was awarded only a farthing in damages and had to pay costs, leaving him ruined. The exhibition is accompanied by related shows in the Netherlands and across Europe.
