WESR Brings Andean Masks and Spirits to European Murals in 'Southern Muralism'

WESR, the Peruvian artist named Danny Figueroa, has established a mural practice that fuses contemporary urban culture with Andean visual traditions. Born in Chiclayo, Peru, in 1980, he began his graffiti journey in Lima in 1996 and is currently based in Berlin. His artistic repertoire includes murals, studio paintings, illustrations, and ceramics. In his murals, WESR incorporates figures from Peruvian folklore like the Ukuku and Qhapaq Qolla, reinterpreting them through his unique graphic style to delve into themes of identity, spirituality, memory, and belonging. The recurring motif of masks enables him to portray figures that transcend the lines between human, animal, and spirit. His improvisational mural technique involves responding to existing wall features, transforming each piece into a site-specific intervention. Titled 'Southern Muralism,' this project integrates elements of Peruvian heritage into urban landscapes across Europe, reflecting a connection to home while reimagining that heritage.
