Wellness-Focused Renovation Transforms Lisbon Townhouse

A Lisbon townhouse has been renovated into a wellness-oriented home by UK-based architects McLean Quinlan. The project, led by associate architect Will Mouland, transformed a subdivided property from the 1990s into a calm oasis for a couple with two children. The client, co-founder of a wellness company, requested natural materials and flexible family spaces while preserving the original façade. The architects reconfigured the split-level floors to improve acoustics and created a four-bedroom main house with a separate apartment. The ground floor features a massage room, yoga space, gym, custom cold plunge pool, and infrared sauna, designed with curtains and warm lighting to avoid a commercial feel. Douglas fir wood gives a cabin-like quality throughout. Portuguese materials like local tiles and lime-washed finishes are used. The first floor includes a kitchen with pantry overlooking the garden, while the second floor houses family bedrooms. Mouland highlighted the principal dressing room and bathroom, which use borrowed light and linen curtains. The design aims for instant tranquillity upon entry, using pale wood, stone, and natural plaster.
