Weathered steel sawtooth pumping station by GinnerupArkitekter in Svendborg

GinnerupArkitekter has completed a wastewater pumping station on the harbour front of Svendborg, Denmark, clad in a sawtooth spiral of weathered-steel panels that evoke an impeller. The cylindrical structure houses technical installations, public toilets, and a rooftop terrace with curved timber decking and a circular steel frame with integrated lighting. The pump rooms sit eight metres below ground. The facade's Corten steel finish in brown, orange, and grey tones references the maritime and industrial context, harmonising with historic red-brick harbour buildings. Doors and access gates are concealed within the panels. The rooftop deck, commissioned by the local municipality, offers information about the South Funen Archipelago, designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2024. The station incorporates a heat recovery system capable of supplying heat to over 200 homes. Partner Jens Erik Rasmussen stated the building is 'like the tip of an iceberg' and aims to demonstrate how utilitarian architecture can contribute to the visual and social life of the harbour.
