Watercolorist Crystal Newton's Artistic Journey from Graphic Design to Teaching

Crystal Newton, a painter, creates works celebrating nature, with watercolor as her primary medium. She began drawing detailed bird images at age 13, influenced by artistic relatives including her grandmother, a landscape painter. Initially pursuing graphic design in college with few fine art courses, Newton later shifted focus after years in that field. On July 4th, 2008, an encounter with an unnamed painter painting marbles in vivid detail prompted her to use better paints, enhancing her watercolor practice. Inspired by John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, and Andrew Wyeth, she values color combinations, values, and composition, occasionally adding humorous or imaginative elements. Newton teaches watercolor, which has improved her own work, and maintains a home studio for teaching and painting. She also works with oils and acrylics for large outdoor projects, has designed her own home and studio, and engages in interior design and contracting.
