Walid Raad's Postscript to the Arabic Edition at the 61st Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-09-15

At the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, Lebanese artist Walid Raad showcases his mixed-media installation, Postscript to the Arabic Edition (1938-2025), under the curation of Koyo Kouoh. This work reconstructs an enigmatic incident from the early 1990s, where five wooden pallets were transported from Lebanon to Ljubljana amid the Yugoslav Wars. Following the conclusion of the Lebanese Civil War in October 1990, weapon crates were dispatched to the Balkans, unveiling paintings on the pallets' reverse side, which were reproductions of lost Arab artworks. The pallets were kept at Moderna Galerija in Ljubljana. Raad has recreated these paintings and the display of the depot, emphasizing the indistinct boundary between art and reality. The installation is featured at the Venice Biennale.
