Vincent Leroy's Eccentric Lenses Transform Bali Landscape into Kinetic Optical Field
French artist Vincent Leroy has unveiled 'Eccentric Lenses', a kinetic sculpture installed in Munduk, Bali, Indonesia. The work consists of a constellation of Fresnel lenses that respond to wind, rotating around off-center axes to create eccentric trajectories. This movement continuously reframes, fragments, and displaces the surrounding landscape—mountains, rice fields, trees, and sky—through optical distortion. The sculpture is never still, never repeating the same configuration, and establishes a dialogue between precise geometry and the unpredictability of nature. The wind acts as an invisible collaborator, activating the piece and reshaping perception. Leroy's installation explores a displaced center and uncertain axis, with each lens moving autonomously yet collectively forming a single kinetic optical field. The project was submitted to designboom via their DIY submissions feature and was edited by Christina Vergopoulou. Images and video documentation accompany the piece, which is set against the lush vegetation and distant mountains of Munduk.
