Vilanismo's First Berlin Show Transforms SAVVY Contemporary

exhibition · 2026-08-26

On 10 September 2026, the Brazilian collective Vilanismo will debut its first exhibition in Berlin at SAVVY Contemporary, as a part of the travelling exhibition programme for the 36th São Paulo Biennale. Titled 'Architectural Echotones. A Poetics of the Surrounds', the exhibition will be open until 22 November 2026. Established in São Paulo in 2021, Vilanismo comprises ten Black artists who challenge stereotypes associated with Black identities, drawing inspiration from peripheral culture, Black masculinities, ancestral wisdom, and Afro-Indigenous experiences. The exhibition transcends traditional gallery boundaries, utilizing installation, painting, drawing, video, and performance to create a dynamic space that resonates socially, politically, and artistically between São Paulo and Berlin. It reflects urbanist AbdouMaliq Simone's idea of 'Surrounds', emphasizing the significance of peripheral neighborhoods as hubs of innovation and political potential. An interview with Vilanismo can be found in ART AFRICA.
