Vienna's Winter 2016-2017 Art Scene: From Freud to O'Keeffe

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Vienna's museums present a dense winter program. At Wien Museum, 'Sex in Wien' explores desire, repression, and transgression, featuring a confiscated 1900 phallic-vaginal device linked to Freud's psychoanalysis. The Secession hosts Francis Alÿs's 'Le temps du sommeil' (111 small paintings) and Avery Singer's computer-generated aerograph works. Künstlerhaus presents 'RomANTIsch?' with 13 artists. At MuseumsQuartier, Mumok shows Július Koller's retrospective; Kunsthalle extends Nathalie Du Pasquier's decorated taxis; Leopold Museum holds the world's largest Egon Schiele collection. Kunsthistorisches Museum features Edmund de Waal meeting Albrecht Dürer. Albertina offers 'Pointillism' (Seurat, Signac, Van Gogh) and 'Albertina Contemporary' (Warhol to Kiefer). Kunstforum hosts Georgia O'Keeffe's largest European retrospective, including 'Jimson Weed/White Flower No 1' (sold for $44.4M at Sotheby's). Freud Museum's showroom presents Peter Kogler's immersive installation. The article also highlights architectural landmarks: Karlskirche, Secession building, Loos Haus, and the MuseumsQuartier complex.
