Victor Ehikhamenor's First Australian Solo Show Explores Memory and Displacement in Sydney

Victor Ehikhamenor, a Nigerian artist, is showcasing his inaugural solo exhibition in Australia titled 'Undoing the City: Making Home' at the Chau Chak Wing Museum in Sydney. This exhibition delves into how communities maintain their identities and histories amidst urban change, featuring both new and recent artworks that link the experiences of residents in Sydney, Cairo, and Port Harcourt. Through his research on neighborhoods at risk of redevelopment, Ehikhamenor highlights the impacts of displacement and the fight to uphold cultural ties. His multidisciplinary approach, rooted in the visual and spiritual legacies of the historic Benin Kingdom, addresses themes of colonialism, identity, and the connection between people and their environments. In collaboration with Blacktown Arts, the exhibition also includes a mentorship initiative for emerging African and African-descended artists in Western Sydney. By connecting diverse communities, it prompts reflection on which histories endure urban change and how art can combat erasure. The exhibition runs from 15 October 2026 to 26 April 2027 at the Penelope Gallery, Chau Chak Wing Museum, University of Sydney.
