Victor Brauner's 160-Work Collection Exhibition Opens at Nouveau Musée National de Monaco

The Nouveau Musée National de Monaco presents "Victor Brauner. L'aventure magique," an exhibition of 160 works from the Patrice Pastor collection, many previously unseen. Running from July 3, 2026, to January 3, 2027, at Villa Paloma, the show spans three floors and includes sculptures, paintings, and drawings. Pastor, a Monaco real estate businessman, began collecting Brauner after childhood fascination with a painting in his family home. Curated by Camille Morando, a Brauner specialist and documentation manager at MNAM-CCI/Centre Pompidou, the exhibition highlights Brauner's surrealist evolution, his use of wax, and influences from African and Oceanic art. Key works include "Nous sommes trahis" (1934), dedicated to André Breton, and the sculpture "Tot în Tot" (1945). Brauner, born in Romania in 1903, fled fascism, lost his Romanian nationality in 1938 due to being Jewish, and was hidden by poet René Char during WWII. He experimented with candle drawings and wax on stone and wood during material shortages. The exhibition also features about ten objects from Brauner's own collection of African and Oceanic art, lent by the Musée d'Art moderne et contemporain de Saint-Étienne.
