Vestige at Slip House: Contemporary Artists Reimagine Medieval Art in East Village Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-10-12

From April 1 to May 2, 2026, Slip House in the East Village showcased Vestige, a collective exhibition that contrasted modern artworks with historical artifacts from the Medieval and Arts & Crafts eras. Among the artists were Jennifer Carvalho, Ben Cowan, Fabiola Jean-Louis, and Abbey Muza. Jean-Louis presented Ezili's Command (2025), crafted with coffee-stained paper and gold leaf, while Muza's works, Portal, Wound (2026) and Rebirth, Judgement, Boundary (2026), were inspired by Medieval manuscripts. Cowan’s Fragment Blessing Hand (2026) highlights Christ's gesture, and Carvalho's Predella of a ruin with weeping eyes (2026) alludes to Saint Lucy. Historical pieces included an anonymous Heraldic Device (c. 1550–1600) and a 16th-century illumination (c. 1510). The 19th-century carriage house setting underscored the relationship between contemporary and historical art.
