Verduyn Gallery: A Rural Belgian Art Space Redefining the Gallery Model

Verduyn gallery, founded by Stefanie Verduyn in the Flemish Ardennes, challenges the traditional urban gallery model by converting historic agricultural buildings—stables, barns, and a farmhouse—on over three acres into a multi-pavilion campus with nearly 5,000 square feet of exhibition space and a sculpture garden. Inspired by time spent in rural Argentina, Verduyn positions the gallery as a destination for hospitality and connection rather than transaction, tapping into a growing desire among collectors for slower, emotional engagement with art. The gallery currently presents four solo exhibitions and a group show: Esther Janssen's "Stages of Flowering" features landscapes that reveal unsettling themes; Guust Mathys's "Take A Closer Look" offers playful sculptural works inspired by urban discovery; Alberto Lamback's "Quietude" explores image-making through multimedia processes; Renée Pevernagie's "Shadow Work" examines transitory existence; and the group show "Al di là" mines the space between memory and imagination. The international roster includes artists from Europe, Asia, North America, and beyond. Critic Julien Delagrange notes, "the middle of nowhere is somewhere after all." Communal meals in the garden foster exchange, making Verduyn not a retreat but a new avenue into the art world.
