Van Gogh's Long-Hidden Self-Portrait to Headline Paris Exhibition
A self-portrait by Van Gogh, titled Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe, will headline an exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, representing its first loan since 1990. This artwork, which is part of the collection of Stavros Niarchos's heirs, has seldom been displayed. The exhibition, 'Gustave Fayet, Collector-Designer: Icons of Modern Art' (9 October – 8 March 2027), showcases pieces previously owned by Gustave Fayet (1865–1925), who purchased the Van Gogh in 1902 for 3,000 francs. Created in January 1889, the self-portrait features a split orange and red backdrop. Its past includes being seized by the Nazis in 1941 and returned in 1948. Niarchos acquired it in the 1970s for $2–3 million, with its current insurance value estimated between $200–300 million.
