exhibition · 2026-08-26

From 16 October 2026 to 10 January 2027, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam will present the inaugural Dutch retrospective of James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834–1903), in collaboration with Tate Britain. This exhibition marks the most extensive European overview of Whistler in thirty years, showcasing loans from institutions in France, the UK, and the US. Emilie Gordenker, the museum's director, emphasizes Whistler's significance as a pivotal artist of the nineteenth century. After moving to Paris at the age of 21, he interacted with figures such as Gustave Courbet and Oscar Wilde. Chief curator Edwin Becker points out Whistler's exploration of color harmonies, featuring key pieces like Harmonie en gris et vert: Miss Cicely Alexander (1872–1874) and nocturnes like Nocturne, Black and Gold: The Fire Wheel (1875).
