Valerie Timmons: Cubist Pop Portraits of Feminine Resilience

Louisville-based artist Valerie Timmons, whose practice spans painting, photography, and digital collage, has developed a style she calls 'Cubist Pop' that merges geometric abstraction with vibrant color. Her work is influenced by Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism, and she often depicts women as symbols of endurance. Timmons' unconventional path—including careers in geology and law—informs her layered approach. A breakthrough came with 'Variation on a Convenience Store,' a digital manipulation that led her into geometric abstraction. Her upcoming solo exhibition 'Masked: What a Woman Holds' will feature at least eighteen paintings exploring female identity and concealment. She is also working on the 'Elizabeth' series of abstract portraits honoring her maternal grandmother, with plans for series dedicated to her mother and paternal grandmother.
