Valérie John Brings Indigo Wave to Palais de Tokyo in Largest Show to Date
Opening 21 October 2026 at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Martinican visual artist Valérie John presents "I telman nwè ki i blé" — Creole for "So black it becomes blue" — billed as the largest exhibition devoted to her work. For decades John has probed her own identity, that of Caribbean peoples, and their ties to Africa through weaving and the entanglement of materials, with indigo as her constant medium: a plant long cultivated in West Africa whose Antillean farming was bound up with slavery. In an RFI interview, John said the title comes from a Martinican expression applied to the "Nèg Kongo," the maroon escapees, a nickname she reclaims as a banner to celebrate them and to write a new history of these "blue men." She describes indigo as a metaphor for the Atlantic, the crossing and its first tragedies, an ocean she calls a memorial space and a vantage point onto the world; in Amerindian culture, she notes, the same blue linked the islands, and the Paris show was built island by island with indigo as connective thread. Her layering of paper, textile, strips of pagne and dye materializes both her own identity and a palimpsest in which no story erases another — a metaphor, she says, for the composite Martinican people. After decades of genealogical research, John says she hopes not to have found what she sought, describing her work as turning identity tension into richness.
