V&A East Museum opens in London's Olympic Park with architecture inspired by Balenciaga tailoring

On April 18, 2026, the V&A East Museum will debut in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Crafted by O'Donnell + Tuomey, the museum's design is influenced by Cristóbal Balenciaga's haute couture, showcasing 479 uniquely shaped, sand-hued precast concrete panels. Visitors will navigate through five levels via internal pathways featuring triangular openings that echo pattern-cutting darts. The opening exhibition, titled "The Music is Black: A British Story," delves into the history of Black British music. Permanent galleries will focus on themes of fashion, art, and identity. Situated within the East Bank cultural district, the museum promotes community engagement and incorporates strategically placed windows, public terraces, integrated benches, Café Jikoni, and curated retail areas, aligning with modern museum practices.
