V&A Curatorial Fellow Explores Depictions of Women's Work in Photographs

A curatorial research fellowship at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London has led to a focus on photographs of women working, drawn from the museum's extensive collection. The fellow, whose name is not disclosed, observed that women's work often occurs in spaces not traditionally defined as workplaces, such as homes, fields, streets, and markets. The selection of photographs highlights the varying visibility of labor: some images, like Eric Freeborn's 'Women at work in a factory' (about 1937–38), immediately convey work through large machinery, while others, such as Émile Fréchon's 'Elderly woman weaving' (about 1900), require closer inspection of hands, posture, and materials to discern the activity. George Bunzl's 'Mexico – Girl Spinning' (about 1965) and Fréchon's 'Two women dig up potatoes, possibly in the Pas de Calais' (about 1900) further illustrate how repetitive or agricultural labor can be overlooked. Pamela Bone's 'Flower Seller Udaipur' (about 1981–92) depicts work through a public exchange. The fellow notes that these images challenge conventional notions of the workplace and invite viewers to recognize work in everyday settings.
