US proposes 25% tariff on Brazilian imports over trade practices

The Trump administration has proposed a 25% punitive tariff on many imports from Brazil, citing unfair trade practices including digital trade, intellectual property protection, and illegal deforestation. The measures, announced by U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, fall under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. They cover electronic payment services, preferential tariffs, intellectual property, and ethanol market access. Exemptions include beef, coffee, rare earths, metals, energy, and aircraft parts. A public consultation is open until July 15. Greer described the action as "quite nuanced" due to broad exemptions and indicated more Section 301 investigations are forthcoming. Brazil's Foreign Ministry did not comment.
