NYC Mayor Mamdani Approves Record $323M Funding for Culture

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the City Council have approved a groundbreaking budget of $323.8 million for the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) for Fiscal Year 2027. This marks a nearly 7% increase from last year's $299.6 million. The funding is part of a more extensive $125.8 billion budget agreement between Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin. As the largest municipal cultural funder in the U.S., the DCLA supports institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and 38 others in the Cultural Institutions Group. To help struggling organizations, a new $10 million annual "Cultural Stability Fund" will be created through 2029, responding to arts leaders' calls for emergency support following federal grant cuts. Mamdani highlighted the vital role of artists and cultural institutions in New York.
