US government appeals tariff refund order with $166B at stake

The Trump administration has formally appealed a judge's order requiring refunds of global tariffs struck down by the Supreme Court. At stake is $166 billion in revenue. US Customs and Border Protection had already begun processing repayments, with $85 billion in the pipeline and $20.6 billion approved for disbursement. The appeal could disrupt this process. The tariffs were imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act after Trump returned to the White House last year. In February, the Supreme Court ruled Trump exceeded his authority. A Court of International Trade judge then ordered refunds, allowing CBP time to comply.
