US Export Curbs Reshape China's Tech IPO Scene Around 'Chokepoints'

A report from Morgan Stanley indicates that U.S. export controls have profoundly altered China's technology landscape, guiding start-ups towards essential 'chokepoint' technologies, especially within the semiconductor supply chain. An examination of 229 IPOs on Shanghai's Star Market from 2022 through mid-July 2026 reveals that 20% of companies going public this year are addressing critical technological chokepoints, an increase from 8.1% in 2022. Furthermore, 60% of firms in 2026 are aiding China's efforts for supply chain self-reliance, up from 41% four years prior. The report, released on Friday, highlights a shift in China's tech bottlenecks, concentrating on semiconductors and upstream pressures on raw materials and specialized components. Among the 21 companies tackling chokepoints this year, 19 are linked to semiconductors, with 15 from the electronics sector. Morgan Stanley analysts noted that as chokepoints evolved over the last three to four years, more domestic firms committed to these sectors, with some poised to access capital markets for expansion by 2026, reflecting Beijing's strategy to lessen dependence on foreign technology amid rising trade barriers.
