Uros: Sustainable Architecture on Lake Titicaca's Floating Islands

Guisella Angela Buendia Taipe proposes a sustainable architectural project for the Uros community on Lake Titicaca, addressing threats from tourism, bioclimatic factors, and cultural erosion. The Uros, descendants of ancient Andeans, have inhabited the lake for over 1,000 years, building artificial floating islands and structures entirely from totora reeds. The project introduces basic facilities, communal centers, and a tourist ancestral dwelling using local materials like totora and bamboo, aiming to preserve identity while providing thermal comfort and zero carbon footprint. It includes a conceptual restaurant with seasonal adaptability. The proposal emphasizes community collaboration, self-construction (Minka), and knowledge transfer.
