Upwork's AI Agent Uma Helps One-Person Studios Hire Freelance Help

A survey conducted by Upwork reveals that 71% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the US intend to boost their reliance on freelancers over the next three months, surpassing the 66% who plan to hire full-time employees. This pattern is reminiscent of the economic downturn in 2008. Almost half of the SMEs express concerns about locating skilled labor. Upwork’s AI agent, Uma, can shortlist freelancers in under six hours and create work summaries. New functionalities include a contract generator and work diary summaries. The platform now integrates with ChatGPT and Claude. Additionally, 84% of SMEs reported positive experiences with freelancers, with client spending increasing by 5% annually. According to Upwork's Future Workforce Index 2026, 38% of skilled workers in the US are freelancing. Upwork applies a 5% service fee for the Basic plan and 10% for Business Plus.
