Uppsala Art Museum Hosts Eija-Liisa Ahtila Retrospective 'A Possible Image'

Uppsala Art Museum is presenting a retrospective exhibition titled 'A Possible Image—of what is just becoming reality' by Finnish artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila. The show features grand cinematic installations created between 2018 and 2025, including 'Potentiality for Love', 'Reflection of a Forest', and 'April ≈ 61°01’ 24°27’'. These works explore the relationships between humans and animals, emotions, and the changing Nordic nature. The exhibition is timed with the production of Ahtila's first public work, 'Ulleråker Madonna', commissioned for a park in Ulleråker, the former psychiatric hospital area in Uppsala. Ahtila, often described as a master of cinematic installation, presents her fourth solo exhibition at the museum. The retrospective offers a deep dive into her recent cinematic universe, where the cycles of life—from birdsong and forest winds to the first snow—are woven into immersive visual experiences. By connecting the indoor installations with the outdoor public commission, the museum highlights Ahtila's engagement with both gallery and site-specific contexts. The exhibition underscores her ongoing exploration of perception, memory, and the natural world, solidifying her reputation as a leading figure in contemporary moving-image art.
