UN Expert Warns Gaza Rubble Removal Risks Erasing Evidence of Atrocity Crimes

Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the Palestinian territories, has raised an alarming concern regarding the extensive removal of rubble in Israeli-controlled areas of Gaza. She warned that this could obliterate evidence of possible 'atrocity crimes' and impede the identification of human remains. In a statement on Monday, Albanese pointed out the significant consequences of Israel's ongoing actions involving the removal, crushing, and relocation of debris. She described Gaza's rubble as a 'material record' of the conflict, containing human remains and crucial evidence for investigating alleged international crimes, including genocide. According to Palestinian authorities, over 10,000 individuals are still buried beneath the rubble. Appointed by the UN Human Rights Council in 2022, the Italian independent expert noted she received credible reports last month about the 'deliberate and widespread removal' of debris. Albanese has faced severe criticism from Israel and its allies for her allegations of genocide and war crimes against Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. Her warning highlights the critical need for preserving evidence and ensuring accountability for potential international crimes.
