ULTRA STUDIO's Uehara Apartment Challenges Tokyo's Generic Urban Landscape

Tokyo's urban landscape, often criticized for its chaotic yet monotonous architecture, is challenged by ULTRA STUDIO's new apartment building in Uehara. The project, curated by Miwa Negoro, spans 899 m² and was completed in 2025. The design team includes Yuji Mukaiyama, Yushi Sasada, Alyssa Ueno, Daiyu Inoue, and Akito Ikeda, with structural engineering by Ohno JAPAN, electrical engineering by EOS plus, mechanical and plumbing by Amiju, landscape design by Oryza, lighting design by Filaments, and civil construction by Ishizue Column. The architects question the prevalence of beige-tiled concrete facades in Tokyo's apartment buildings, aiming to reevaluate and update this banal yet wild urban fabric.
