Ultra Arquitetura Revives 1930s House in Porto Alegre as Remanso Cultural Institute

Ultra Arquitetura has revamped a 1930s residence in Porto Alegre's Independência district into the Remanso Cultural Institute, a hub for art, education, and community engagement. The renovation maintains the building's historical essence while incorporating modern features, such as exposed brick on the second floor and flowing blue metal accents at the main entrances. These blue elements draw inspiration from the Portuguese word 'Remanso,' which signifies a tranquil inlet or meandering river section, facilitating movement throughout the space. Inside, the institute offers adaptable areas, including multifunctional galleries, artist studios with natural light and balconies facing a central courtyard, classrooms, a reading room, a shop, and administrative offices. A 30-seat auditorium connects to the courtyard amphitheater, enabling events to spill outdoors. The courtyard, designed with curved planted beds and amphitheater seating, serves as a venue for fairs and community events. Plans for a future link to a neighboring café courtyard will enhance the institute's integration into the local cultural landscape. The project is captured in photographs by Cristiano Bauce.
