UK-France 'One In, One Out' Migrant Return Pilot Scrapped

other · 2026-09-30

On Wednesday, the UK government announced the termination of a pilot initiative with France designed to decrease the number of migrants using small boats to cross the English Channel. The Home Office declared that the "one in, one out" agreement is "no longer processing new cases." This arrangement allowed the detention and return of individuals who arrived in the UK via the perilous crossing, in exchange for a similar number of asylum seekers who followed a safe and legal process. Approximately 1,500 individuals were returned to France, while slightly fewer were brought to the UK. Although the deal was set for three years, it contained a provision for early termination.
