In 2023, the design sector in the UK emerged as the leading contributor to the national economy, generating a gross value added (GVA) of £136.7 billion, which marks a 40% rise since 2019. This industry now represents £1 of every £20 produced across the country, outpacing the overall growth of the UK economy at 24%. The design field's contribution is nearly twice that of the accommodation and food services sector, which stands at £70 billion. Since 2020, employment in this area has surged by 15%, resulting in an additional 297,000 jobs, bringing the total to 2.27 million. Significant growth is observed in Wales (88%), the northeast (67%), and Scotland (32%). However, challenges persist, including job threats from AI, low diversity (2% female, 2% Black), and a 68% decline in Design and Technology GCSE students from 2014 to 2024.
