UK Arts Report: 95% of Women See Gender Inequality, Ageism Rampant

A new report by Women in the Arts reveals pervasive gender discrimination and ageism in the UK arts sector, with 95% of women surveyed believing gender inequality persists and 75% reporting unconscious bias or sexism. The survey of 76 arts professionals found that 69% felt age negatively affected their career success, rising to 100% among those in artistic roles. The report warns that AI in hiring could exacerbate these issues by penalizing career breaks and reinforcing historical biases. Performers highlighted pressures to look young, with casting opportunities dropping off at 39 and fewer roles for actresses over 50. The report criticizes the industry's fixation on 'young and emerging' talent, neglecting experienced women. Actor Maureen Beattie, 72, who recently played Lear in Pitlochry, expressed unsurprise and called for more substantial roles for older women. Dr Jennifer Tuckett, CEO of Women in the Arts, emphasized the urgency of investigating AI's impact. The findings stem from a five-year project with partners including the Writers' Guild, Equity, and Sphinx Theatre, funded by Arts Council England. Recommendations include representation targets, leadership programs, and algorithmic audits. The research will be handed to ministers on 12 October to campaign for an all-party parliamentary group on women in the arts.
