UK Air Travel Disruption Continues After NATS Glitch
Travellers in the UK faced continued disruption on Wednesday as more than 150 flights were cancelled, following a technical glitch in the country's air traffic control system that had already caused chaos. According to aircraft tracking website FlightRadar24, 177 flights scheduled for Wednesday had been axed, adding to the 1,300 cancellations to and from UK airports the previous day. The majority of the latest cancellations were at London's Heathrow Airport, the UK's busiest. The National Air Traffic Services (NATS), which operates the country's air traffic control, acknowledged the ongoing difficulties, stating in a post on X that the recovery process has been complex and will take time to resolve across the entire aviation network. In response to the situation, British Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander was scheduled to meet with NATS chief executive Martin Rolfe on Wednesday to discuss the matter. The glitch has caused significant travel misery for passengers, with many facing delays and cancellations as the system works to return to normal operations.
