UAU Studio's Petal-Like Floating Home Drifts Across Lake Como

architecture-design · 2026-06-14

UAU Studio has designed Lucia, a floating micro-home for Lake Como, Italy. Inspired by the 15th-century fishing vessel batél from Alessandro Manzoni's novel The Betrothed, the 269-square-foot structure resembles a giant petal. It uses locally sourced recycled materials, including birch plywood and lake waste, and features custom multifunctional furniture. An electric motor and flat-bottomed design enable quiet movement, while an adaptive roof opens to different views. Lucia connects to a network of docking points called Darsena Link along the lake's shoreline, which include solar panels, charging points, markets, and gardens. Targeted at young nomads, the project aims to foster community and connection to nature.
